Our Story

Stephen Hudson

Established in 1995

Tynemouth Surf Co is a family run business which was established in 1995 by surfing legend Stephen Hudson. It is now owned by his son, Louis Thomas-Hudson, former Captain of Team GB Junior Surf Team. Tynemouth Surf Co is a surf shop, online shop and surf school. The surf school is an accredited Surfing England Centre of Excellence and was voted ‘Best Surf School in the UK’ in 2017 by the UK Pro Surf Tour Awards.

Louis Thomas-Hudson

Louis was born in 1997. He started competing at the age of 6 and went on to become Captain of Team GB Junior Surf Team in 2015 where he captained the team at the ISA World Junior Championships in Oceanside, California. Louis still competes and came 3rd in the English Longboard Championships in 2020. He surfs and charges big waves when the swells are good. Louis also trains an advanced grom squad of talented young surfers who compete nationally.

Ronnie Hudson

Our Heritage

Louis’ grandad, Ronny Hudson was one of the first surfers in Tynemouth. Having travelled to Australia, Ronny decided to ship a 10 foot board back and start surfing it on Longsands with a couple of his friends. This board is now in the shop if you want to check it out.

Ronny passed his love of surfing to his son Stephen who was amongst a handful of surfing pioneers in the 80s and 90s. Stephen and friends travelled to spots such as Bali and California in search of waves. Stephen also competed and came 4th in the British Longboard Championships in 1998.

We stock a large range of wetsuits (including hooded), surfboards such as soft boards, minimals, longboards, and shortboards, surfing accessories and lots of our own branded clothing. School Surf for all abilities

Just a short walk from our shop to Longsands Beach you will find our Surf School. We provide beginner, intermediate and advanced lessons for participants as well as tailored lessons for schools, parties and private groups. If you’re looking for a present, our gift vouchers are a great option and can be used for products in the shop or used for surf lessons & hire. All of our surf coaches are highly qualified and DBS checked.
